Pack Monday returns

Pack Monday Fair
falls on the first Monday after October 10th and is promised to be a lively event. Pack Monday returns again turning a normally quiet, sedate and sophisticated town into a noisy bustling scene of shear chaos. Quite frankly I find it amusing how the atmosphere of a town such as Sherborne with its Fine Art galleries, Designer Clothes shops, Superior Hairdressing salon (chandeliers included), Specilialist card and gift shops, kitchens from Fired Earth and above average fine leather goods galore, can be tranformed overnight. Stalls, burgers, woolley hats, essential Christmas presents!! and frankly anything that can change hands for a quick buck is welcome, tacky or not here we come.

Origins, who knows. Maybe a celebration of the completion of the Abbey, workmen packing up their tools, or maybe a gathering of hopefuls looking for work and forming a pact, culminating in a celebratery fair, sometimes referred to as Mop Fairs. Possibly the date was significant, as October is Old Michaelmas Day, the beginning of Autumn or maybe is it just an excuse for another way of reaping monetary reward for no other reason than a quick profit for very little outlay.

Who knows? Does anyone else share this view or is Pack Monday an event that is eagerly awaited.
