Description:
The Blue Pool just south of Wareham, is a former clay pit dug in about 1840, which remained in production until the usable clay was taken out. Records of clay digging at Furzebrook date from the mid-1600's.
The clay was first used to make tobacco pipes but by the 1760's due to a huge demand for fine China, famous names such as Josiah Wedgewood, Minton and Royal Worcester were competing to buy the clay. The whole fascinating story of the local Clay Industry can be seen in the Museum - well worth a visit.
After the clay was dug the pit should have been filled in again, but due to negligence the pumps were finally removed and the pits filled with water leaving this charming lake.
The Blue Pool was born and apart from the period of the Second World War, this Dorset attraction has has been charming visitors ever since. It is now famous for the ever changing kaleidoscope of colours. Sandy paths climb towards views of the Purbeck Hills and steps lead down to the waters edge.
The Teahouse, built in 1935, opens daily and offers delicious lunches and Dorset Cream Teas with freshly baked scones served all day.
Some facilities for the disabled. Dogs on leads welcome.
2010 is a very special year as The Blue Pool will celebrate it's 75th Anniversary.
