Avon beach is a fine sandy beach with safe swimming and views to the Isle of wight.
The location is between Christchurch and Highcliffe, signposted from the A337 Lymington Road. The Wilts and Dorset bus company run a service half hourly along the Mudeford, Friars cliff and Highcliffe routes (121 and 123).
Avon Beach is a perfect choice for families of all ages who wish to paddle, swim or even take part in a variety of water sports located at the Steamer Point area of the beach. There are canoes and windsurfing facilities.
There is a promenade café and a toilet block nearby with disabled access.
Dogs are not allowed on the beach from May 1 until September, but are permitted on the promenade on a lead.
At the top of the cliff is a monument to the experimental radar research station which was located at the Steamer Point cliff top. Some of the buildings now house a coastguard training school. The cliff top woodland is a Nature Reserve.
Places to visit on a rainy day are:-
Museum of Electricity, Bargates. History of electrical supply and appliances from toasters to trams. There are live experiments and demonstrations. Open Easter to September 12-4.30pm daily.
Adventure Wonderland Merritown Lane, Hurn (opp. Bournemouth Airport). Children's rides, maize, café, shop, live characters and shows. See our Dorset Info section in Guide2Dorset.
