Description:
The Shaftesbury Abbey Museum & Gardens are located just off the High Street with easy access to car parks, shops, public toilets, restaurants, tea rooms and pubs. The museum and gardens are set on the site of Saxon England's foremost Benedictine nunnery founded by King Alfred in 888AD. The Abbey was to act as a catalyst for the prosperity of the town and surrounding area for over 650 years. The excavated foundations of this once important and influential Abbey lie in a peaceful walled garden, which remains a lasting reminder of the Abbey's eventful past.
There are a number of Events that take place throughout the year including an archaeology roadshow, a Shakespeare play, Herb Walk and Herb workshop.
The Museum is linked to the Gold Hill Museum located at the top of the famous Gold Hill (remember the famous 1970's Hovis ad) and joint tickets can be bought for both.
