Church Ope Cove is one of Portland's few beaches. Parking for a limited number of cars can be found a quarter of a mile away, opposite Pennsyvania Castle.It is made up of pebble and is surrounded on three sides by cliffs, which shelter bathers from the prevailing wind. Swimming is safe here and snorkelling and diving can be enjoyed. For children the water is clean and relatively safe within the cove, but ouside of this area the currents are strong and are suitable only for experienced swimmers. Not suitable for young children or pushchairs.
There is a cafe and caravan park nearby and there are toilets if needed, actually on the beach.
The nearest train station is in Weymouth seven miles away. First National and Sureline provide bus services from Weymouth.
Dogs are allowed on the beach.
Note of interest. Rufus Castle overlooks the cove and the ruins of Old Andrew's church can be reached by steps and footpaths from the cove. The area is a haven for bird watchers and dolphins have sometimes been sited in the channel.

Portland Castle. One of Henry V111's finest coastal fortresses, in a waterfront location overlooking Portland Harbour, with five hundred years of history. Open daily (April to October) 10am to 6pm. Tel: 01305 820539.
Portland Museum & Gallery, fossil garden and exhibitions. Open daily 10.30am to 1pm, 1.30pm to 5pm (not Wednesday or Thursday). Open all week during school holidays. Tel: 01305 821804.
