Description:

Church Ope Cove is one of Portland's few beaches. Parking for a limited number of cars can be found a quarter of a mile away, opposite Pennsyvania Castle.

It is made up of pebble and is surrounded on three sides by cliffs, which shelter bathers from the prevailing wind. Swimming is safe here and snorkelling and diving can be enjoyed. For children the water is clean and relatively safe within the cove, but ouside of this area the currents are strong and are suitable only for experienced swimmers. Not suitable for young children or pushchairs.

There is a cafe and caravan park nearby and there are toilets if needed, actually on the beach.

The nearest train station is in Weymouth seven miles away. First National and Sureline provide bus services from Weymouth.

Dogs
are allowed on the beach.

Note of interest. Rufus Castle  overlooks the cove and the ruins of Old Andrew's church  can be reached by steps and footpaths from the cove. The area is a haven for bird watchers and dolphins have sometimes been sited in the channel.
