Bournemouth to Boscombe Pier Swim - 1,200 take part

They wore red swimming hats, wetsuits or swimsuits as 1,200 people walked into the sea at Bournemouth to swim the 1.4 miles to Boscombe Pier for charity.

The British Heart Foundation, organisers hope to raise £85,000 from the event through registratrion fees and sponsorship.

Every participant was given a medal at the finish line as a thankyou for taking part. Ruth Thomas of BHF said it as not a race but those who took part could time themselves on the timeclock. She went on to say: "We would like to encourage people to send in their sponsorship money as soon as possible because it will go towards the fight against heart desease research."

This year's event was fully subscribed several months ago. However another Pier to Pier takes place on August 9 in Weymouth and those taking part are offered tickets for next year's Bournemoth event.
