Christchurch's Saxon origins investigated

03 September 2009

Description:

Chrsitchurch's Saxon origins investigated !

Archaeologists are to carry out a number of important surveys in the town's Druitt Gardens.

The scruffy town centre woodland has been subject of a £500,000 masterplan drawn up by local architect Hilary Martin on behalf of Chrsitchurch Borough Council.

The Druitt Guardians group have been formed to work alongside the council and they propose to tidy up the gardens, plant new trees and create new focal points, gateways and seating areas.

As part of the plans to improve the grounds bestowed upon the town by Charlotte Druitt in 1946, researchers from Bournemouth University's school of conservation sciences have been undertaking an archaeological survey.

Project officer, Harry Manley said that Druitt Gardens is a unique undeveloped area of land in the town that could provide a snapshot into the past. He also said there are a lot of question marks over the Saxon origins of this town that could be answered through the current studies.
