Kingston Lacey House exhibition

11 September 2009

Description:

Kingston Lacey House celebrated in new exhibition !

The famous East Dorset landmark that is Kingston Lacey House is being celebrated in a new exhibition of paintings, photographs, embroidery and stories, all inspired by Beech Avenue, the tree-lined section of the B3082 Blandford to Wimborne Road.

The exhibits have been gathered for more than a year by the National Trust.

Among the local artists to submit original work is Verna green, pictured, including two paintings and a photograph of the avenue's 731 beech trees.

The trees were planted in 1835 by William John Bankes as a tribute to his mother, Frances. Of the 731 planted - representing each day of a normal year and one extra for a leap year - only 520 remain, due to a fatal combination of old age, pollution, climate change, and untreatable desease, all of which has weakened the trees. They are gradually being replaced by more resilient Hornbeam specimens.
