Description:
Whale spotted off Dorset coast !The 9ft whale, a northern bottlenose, was recently spotted off the Dorset coast, swimming near Bournemouth Pier and in Poole Bay.
As the mammal gets water from food rescuers fear it may become dehydrated if it only feeds on small fish in the area rather than its usual diet of squid. Experts went out in a boat to check on its welfare earlier. It has been named "Gilbert" after the RNLI lifeguard who spotted him.
British Divers Marine Rescue (BDMR) said that it was very unusual to see a whale around the coast of Dorset and that "Gilbert" should have gone over to Scotland and down the west coast.
The RNLI spotted him a couple of days ago and people are being asked to stay clear of him so that he does not get stressed or is made nervous, which could cause him medical problems.
Rescuers will try to encourage "Gilbert" into the English Channel and then off down to the Atlantic to join the rest of his pod.
