Rare fish sited in Poole Bay !A rare UK fish was spotted by a diver in Poole Bay. The Couch's goby is only the fifth that has been seen off the coast of Dorset in the past four years.
Gobius couch, which is a protected species was spotted by a female diver whilst carrying our a Seasearch wildlife survey.
It is more usual to find black gobies, but the Couch's goby is vary rare indeed. The species has been recorded in a few places around Britain, such as Cornwall, northwest Ireland and very sheltered areas in the south of Ireland.
It grows to 9cm long and feeds on algae, small worms and crustaceans. Because it is so rare it is classified as fully protected under the Wildlife & Countryside Act.
