Description:
Dorset Cross becomes Dorset flag
Dorset's first ever official flag has been chosen after a poll attracting thousands of votes.
The Dorset County Council organized a competition attracting some 3,868 votes and the Dorset Cross won with 54%. The County of Dorset was the only County without an official flag and four designs were short listed. Previous attempts to choose a flag for the county lacked support, but it grew with the 2012 Olympics sailing events being held in Weymouth and Portland.
The campaign was led by Dave White who was the co-designer and he explained that the gold color was in fact taken from the famous Gold Hill in Shaftesbury and the Gold Cap location in the Dorset County.
The final decision was taken for the Dorset flag out of the four finalists because it represented the gold and yellow coat of arms and the gold and sunny disposition of the Dorset people. Graham Bartram, the chief vexillologist, someone who studies flags, and chairman of the judging panel explained that choosing a County flag was a trend that many Counties are now adopting as a sign of pride in their area.
John Peake, chairman of Dorset County Council, added: "It's wonderful that so many people have voted and that we now have a symbol for the county we all love."
