Bournemouth's artworks on TV

16 November 2009

Description:

Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum is to be featured on TV !

The art gallery and museum situated on Eastcliff in Bournemouth is to be featured in an art documentary series.

The museum was visited by broadcaster Howard Jacobson as part of series of programmes to be shown on Channel 4 in 2010.

The series of documentaries will focus on how the English engage with the ideas of love, desire and sex in art. Apparently Mr Jacobson finds the collection at the Russell-Cotes particularly interesting and indicative of the tastes of the time - the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The tastes are also of a particular man, Sir Russell-Cotes, who was Lord Mayor of Bournemouth and a pillar of respectability. However he also had a fascination with nudity and the female form.

The museum was the former home of Sir Merton Russell-Cotes and Lady Russell-Cotes who announced in 1907 that they were leaving their collection of art to the people of Bournemouth and it was opened to the public in 1909.

The museum is ideally situated on the clifftop overlooking the sea. It has a beautiful garden and entry is free, although donations are always welcome.
