Weymouth, Dorset 2012 Olympics Security FearsIf the Government does not come up with the cash Olympic security in Dorset could be compromised say emergency service chiefs. According to Dorset Fire & Rescue Service they will not be able to manage a safe Olympics for Weymouth, Dorset if they do not get vital funding.
The situation is "a complete mess" said Clive Chamberlain, Police Federation Chairman who demanded action from ministers. A 2012 costed security plan which should have been published last year wll be delayed until "later in 2009." Dorset Fire & Rescue needs £1 million for planning the event, but have sofar received only £300,000.
Darran Gunter, chief fire officer said he was "very concerned " and went on to say "without that money we won't have any spare funds for the measures we must implement to ensure a safe event . If it doesn't arrive we'd be unwilling and legally unable to amend funding provisions to secure it from elsewhere. Obviously it's up to the Olympic authorities to determine whether the games environment is safe enough."
Mr Gunter continued by stating " But if the money doesn't come in and we don't feel it's safe enough, we'll be making sure everyone knows that."
A Home Office spokesman said "The Government is committed to ensuring a safe and secure London 2012 Olympics and Paralympic Games. Our plan for security has already been circulated to key stakeholders. We are now in the process of developing this further."
