Description:
Pub landlords Paul Wiscombe and Ben Ambridge will climb Golden Cap, the highest point on the south coast, 47 times. The 47 times climb equates to 29,029 feet, equivalent to climbing Mount Everest. The charity climb is in aid of CLIC Sargent and the Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance.
The chaps decided to embark on the challenge last year after discussing it over a few too many beers at their pub, The Anchor Inn at Seatown. Paul said:"The drink was the motivational factor I think. We've been involved in the Ten Tors at school but nothing else for a considerable amount of time."
Ben Said: "I don't really know why we said Everest. I did something similar just after school; we ran up Guys Tower in London - the equivalent height - but there were four of us and we split it, so we only had to do a quarter each".
The pair will ascend Golden Cap 47 times in 5 days. Ben said: That's ten a day and a nice slack seven on the last day".
The guys have been training since last September by walking to and from their homes in Lyme Regis and Bridport and have walked up and down Golden Cap in their afternnon breaks.
Paul said: "I walk to work from Lyme Regis to Seatown and I walk home again, which is about a 14 mile round trip. I do that about two or three times a week. It's equivalent to about three ascents each way".
Ben said: I've probably been up it 25 times in total and in one go three times".
Both men admit to being slightly under prepared, despite their training, and are thankfully injury free. They have a base camp to help them in their challenge.
The guys embarked on their mountainous journey today and are set to finish on Sunday 29th March. They are hoping to raise £5,000 for their chosen charities.
