Poole businessman Richard Carr could be banned from clubs

18 April 2009

Description:

Richard Carr, former nightclub owner and Poole developer, could be banned from bars in the Boscombe area of Bournemouth after alleged disputes with staff at two venues on the same night.

The name of the 49-year-old has been put forward to the next meeting of the East Bournemouth Town Watch and he could be barred from every nightspot in the scheme. He denies doing anything wrong.

Apparently a verbal altercation took place at the Opera House  when staff confronted him for walking in without being on the guest list or attempting to pay.

Mr Carr launched and ran the Slinky dance brand at the venue and is understood to have referred to this during the dispute.

Police attending an incident at nearby Greens Bar were asked to intervene by Ester Gill, events manager at the venue and Mr Carr was driven away by a friend.

Ms Gill said: “We won’t be bullied into letting anyone into our premises and he was not respectful to staff. He has been barred from coming here. I am chair of East Bournemouth Town Watch and I have forwarded his name for consideration at the next meeting.”

The incident happened last Friday night when the club was hosting a Slinky house music night. It has been claimed that after leaving the venue, Mr Carr got into an argument with a member of the bar staff at the upmarket Urban Beach Hotel  in nearby Sea Road and was asked to leave.

Mr Carr said: “I went to the Opera House  on Slinky’s birthday. I started it . When I got to the front door, I was asked to wait. I didn’t even enter the premises. I have done absolutely nothing. I would be happy for anyone to view the CCTV footage because it will vindicate me.”

Mr Carr said he later remonstrated with a member of staff at Urban Beach Hotel after being served warm beer. “I said I wanted cold beer. The bloke got the hump and I said ‘OK, we’ll go’. This is petty Bournemouth bull. I’m on the verge of packing up and moving away. I would like to think if it comes up in Town Watch that I will be taking legal action.”

Owner of Urban Beach Hotel,  Mark Cribb said: “I’m not aware that it was anything to do with warm beer. A very professional member of staff took the decision not to serve him because of his behaviour.”

Last year Mr Carr was made personally bankrupt following the collapse of his property and nightclub empires. He re-emerged on the nightclub scene last month as an advisor to the new owners of nightclub in central Bournemouth.
