Description:
Dorset Village Reef and Spa to top £11m.
The new Dorset Reef and Spa project on the Boscombe Town coast to include Europe's first artificial reef is disappointingly way over budget and time. It is the first of its type in Europe. The scheme is estimated to cost double the original estimate totaling more than £3m. The additional costs are blamed partly on bad weather causing delays and the need to increase the delivery of sand.
The extra costs will be covered by the council's capital programme pot. One of the problems has been to obtain a new license from the government as it ran out in September. The reef, the size of a football pitch is to consist of 55 bags of sand, situated East of the Dorset Boscombe Pier and measuring 225m (740ft) in total.
There are three other artificial reefs in the world, these are Narrowneck, Queensland, Cables, Western Australia and Mount Maunganui, New Zealand.
